THE NEWS OF Margaret’s death spread quickly, and neighbors began to arrive. Death was common in the Wyoming ranch country, and people knew what to do. The women gathered around the body and exclaimed that Margaret looked like she was resting. Why, they expected her to wake up any minute now. They brought cookies and fried chicken and beef stew, enough to feed the family for a week. The men gathered outside with Mr. Gurley. They passed around pint bottles and kicked at the dirt with their boots, not knowing what to say. Charlie stayed with them for a time, then went into the barn and helped two cowboys build a coffin.

People didn’t linger. There were chores to do. Ellen remained until it was time to milk the cows. By then, almost everyone was gone. Charlie had waited for her, and they rode down the road side by side, not hurrying.

“Folks are saying it’s for the best,” he said.

“It’s never for the best.”

“That’s what I was thinking.”
